At the age of two to three years old, toddlers seem to grow rapidly. However, you will be dealing with emotional developments. It will be a battle of wills and you have to deal with fits of tantrums.

Your toddler seems to be growing at a rapid pace once he passes his second year. He wants so many things all at once and because he can now form sentences, he asks too many questions. Sometimes you will be put in a spot in trying to come up with the easiest explanation he can understand. Your child will try to emulate what the people around him regularly do, so you have to be careful that your toddler does not witness much conflict and bickering around him.

His young mind will now be able to discern if you are trying to teach him something, so you can try giving him some short and easy commands. Doing this is a way of training his mind to follow instructions. Your little toddler may be eager during the first few times but you cannot expect him to obey if he seems to be engrossed or busy with playing or watching the TV. You don’t have to lose your temper over this if he chooses to disobey you, remember your toddler is still a baby. He still doesn’t understand the concept of having a sense of duty or responsibility.

If you were not able to curb his tantrums when he first started with his fits of hysterics, then you will have to contend with a lot of it by the time he’s three years old. It’s probably high time you deal with his tantrums differently before he acquires it as a permanent habit. In fact, it’s going to be more often as a result of wrong choices he makes or things he does purely out of impulse to test your patience.

Whether your toddler is a boy or girl, encourage them to engage in worthwhile activities, like Lego blocks for boys and other toys that can tap their creativity. In general, encourage your young one to scribble, trace shapes and stencils, and dabble in coloring books. You can even ask him questions about the images he created so you can have an idea what goes in his young mind and what seem to be his interests. If you see some form of fascination for a certain subject, e.g. dinosaurs, robots, or music, try to supplement him with more materials. This can keep him busier most of the time.

Your child is very eager to learn during these stages and it would be a good thing to nurture his interest for learning and acquiring skill whether in arts, music, or sports. All these will keep him preoccupied, as well as develop his self-confidence. Remember, in just a year or two, he will soon be a preschooler and there will be tougher challenges in store for him.

The newborn is now on his way to toddlerhood and parents will have a lot on their hands. This is the stage when babies should be closely watched over as they are bound to be daring. Babies develop at different stages, some are ahead, and some may lag behind.

Your little newborn has grown big by this time moving on towards toddlerhood. Babies have grown confident, knowing that they are persons in their own rights. Place a mirror in front of him and he will be delighted with what he’ll see. Mind you, there will be dripping saliva at this stage since he doesn’t know what to do with all the liquid filling up his mouth. Just keep a bib tied around his neck to keep him from soiling his shirt.

Be sure to keep his hands clean because he’s bound to place it in his mouth so often. He feels some kind of itch and soreness in the gum area where baby teeth are slowly appearing. You can try prying his fingers off his mouth to discourage him from the habit. He may resist and keep putting it back but if you do it repeatedly, he will stop putting it without being conscious about it.

Most of the significant developments happen during the last quarter of the baby’s first year and here are some of them:

1. You can now engage your baby in a conversation and you will see him listening attentively or try to repeat the last syllable of the words you say. Some babies will be able to utter syllables around the 10th month. “Mama” and “Dada” are two of their first words.

2. Babies will attempt to sing, sway with the music, show appreciation by clapping; wave bye- bye if somebody waves at him.

3. Enjoy tickles, peek-a-boos, re-discover his toys, pull, push, stack, squeeze, and rattle them.

4. Babies at this stage can now sit by themselves and attempt little steps; if your baby is daring, you will see him attempt to walk by holding on to chairs and tables for support. Hence, it is very important that somebody is always near at hand to watch over the baby. In case your baby loses his balance and falls down, don’t show too much apprehension but instead assure him that everything is all right.

5. He will be interested in feeding himself as an attempt to emulate what grown ups do. Don’t mind the mess he makes because these are all part of his learning process. In case he drops any of his food, let’s say a cookie or bread, don’t give it back to him. Try to instill the idea that any food if dropped on the floor is already soiled and therefore no longer fit for eating.

6. By the twelfth month, babies who have been encouraged to walk, will be able to walk and those who were encouraged to talk, sing and dance will be able to do these things. They will be able to say ‘no’, if they don’t like something or nod and clap if they are delighted or agreeable.

How fast babies develop will depend on how well they were nurtured in terms of food and motivation.

The baby will enjoy being a part of the adult’s world and knows they still have a lot to learn. A happy baby can brighten up a home.

Pregnancy is one condition where technology advances and electronic devices cannot provide appropriate answers and treatment. Unless, faced with a life threatening condition, technology and electronic options are the least of her choices. Doing so can only bring about fetal loss or deformity

nce a woman becomes pregnant, her concerns and needs become complicated. The change in her physiology renders her susceptible to certain disorders and diseases, thus, prenatal and extra care is important to continuously monitor her condition. In relation to this, there are certain aspects of health conditions that may need technological advancement. She may have to deal with deciding on the risk involved in case her health condition will require her to pass through these electronic equipment.

The medical world share different opinions about the effects of radiation, laser, and magnetic imaging. Thus, should you find your self in such dilemma, it may help if you had an idea of what is being suggested.

X-ray machines – This machine uses ionizing radiation and conventional medical beliefs have it that even the lowest dose of X-ray radiation can cause serious birth defects. Hence, the issue becomes more critical if a pregnant woman is required to pass through X-ray more than once during her pregnancy. Unless the expectant mother’s life is clearly at risk, a pregnant woman is advised not to resort to this.

CT scan – This machine is actually a modification of the X-ray machine, wherein the radiation is in the form of a tube that rotates in a 360-degree circle while examining the person. This tube then produces hundreds of images, relayed by a detector to a computer, which will interpret the information feed. It is said that the total amount of radiation received by the body from CT scan is less than that received from an X-ray machine. Nevertheless, undergoing a CT scan is not recommended for pregnant women.

Ultrasound machine - This machine uses application of a pulse of electric charge in a transducer or a converter of one energy into another. In ultrasound, the transducer’s conversion process generates sound waves that are electronically processed and interpreted in a cathode ray tube. As the sound waves are processed imaging is displayed and will be interpreted by an expert sonologist.

There is a kind of ultrasound suitable for pregnant women and is called an obstetrical ultrasound exam and this is the type recommended for pregnant women. Under ordinary circumstances, an ultrasound is used to diagnose other internal organs such as bladder, heart, kidneys, or thyroid gland.

A pregnant woman who goes through ultrasound may not be suffering from any disorder, but only to determine the position of the baby as well as the gender. In addition, this is allowed only on the sixth month of pregnancy. If ever she is suffering from any disorder concerning any of her internal organs, she is considered a high risk and will have to go through ultrasound on her fourth month of pregnancy.

MRI devices – This is a recommended alternative if other forms of technological diagnosis are not allowed. However, magnetic resonance imaging is not allowed if the pregnant woman is in the first three months of her pregnancy. Although there are no published reports that exposure to magnetic fields can cause genetic damage, the possibility that it can provoke genetic mutation cannot be discounted.

EFM devices – This electronic fetal monitoring device is a like a heart beat monitoring device similar to a stethoscope. It was later modified into a fetoscope and was subsequently developed as an EFM device that resembles a portable ultrasound machine; the latter can easily pick up sounds that human ears cannot distinguish, including fetal heartbeat.

There are more electronic devices and equipment being developed to help the pregnant woman cope with her pregnancy. They are all aimed to help monitor her condition, while in the most delicate of stages. However, tests still have to prove that unlike all other devices they will not cause harm to the mother and the baby.

We seem to be at a loss and often seek medical intervention as our initial course of action, if one of our children falls ill even with the most common of diseases. Basic knowledge about two of the common ailments suffered by children can help us cope with these situations.

First time parents are usually sufferers when their child contracts even the most common of diseases. They feel they are too inept to handle the situation and fear that their baby’s health is something beyond their capabilities. Suddenly, their life becomes disrupted and stressed, all because they lack the basic understanding of the illnesses that beset their child.

In view of this, the following information about two of the common childhood illnesses may serve as your guide in managing and preventing them. However, this is not recommended to replace your pediatrician’s advice but only to aid you in coping with certain situations and become a more effective source of medical information to your child’s pediatrician.

Abdominal Pain– This is a chronic or recurring disease among infants lasting for about three months. The most common cause is the inability of the nursing infant to pass out air, hence the logic behind burping a child after each feeding. Burping techniques vary and it would be best for you to ask help from an experienced member of your family on how you could properly help your baby release the air in his or her tummy. In fact, falling asleep after each feeding without being burped is one of the most common reasons why babies cry incessantly.

In older babies or toddlers, a common cause for their abdominal pain is constipation, as they tend to lack appreciation in drinking sufficient amounts of water. However, take note of the following symptoms that may accompany your baby’s abdominal pain: Fever, diarrhea, blood in the stools, unusual urinary color and smell, decreased appetite, paleness, signs of fatigue and weight loss. You should not wait until all of these symptoms appear before seeking the help of a pediatrician.

Fever– You must keep in mind that fever is not the illness but is a symptom of an illness. According to medical studies, fever may arise from a viral infection or bacterial infection. There is a difference between these two types of infection as far as medication is concerned. Viral infections do not require antibiotic treatment but bacterial infections often do.

Below is a list of what you should note in case your child is with fever and therefore imperative that you seek medical intervention:

· The child with fever is less than 6 months, regardless of his or her thermometer readings.

· Your child is older than 6 months and the body temperature is higher than 39.50 degrees Celsius or 103 degrees Fahrenheit.

· Your child is older than 6 months and the temperature does not exceed 39.50 degrees Celsius or 103 degrees Fahrenheit but has been persistent for more than 3 days.

· Your child’s fever may have passed but he or she continues to be pale, unwell, or weak.

In order to lower your child’s fever, a proper dose of Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen, taken at proper intervals will help make your child feel better. Giving a lukewarm sponge bath and dressing a child in light airy clothes can help bring the temperature down. However, keep the feet warm with socks, as they tend to be cold due to poor blood circulation.

In giving your child medications, you should keep in mind the following important information:

· An over dosage of Acetaminophen or even Ibuprofen should be avoided. Take care not to administer these medicines for more than a week. Ibuprofen is a relatively new medication and is considered as safe as Acetaminophen, but the latter has been proven to cause liver damage if given in excessive dosages.

· Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen are available in combined formulations with decongestants and cough remedies, and are not considered as safe substitutes for fever relief.

· Aspirin or acetylsalicylic acid is not a recommended treatment for children.

Fever accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, rashes, difficulty in breathing and notable changes in color and odor of stools and urine are indications that your child may be suffering from a more serious illness. Thus, seeking immediate medical attention for your child is a must.

As a precautionary measure especially for newborn infants, parents should make sure that the proper vaccinations for immunization, scheduled by your family doctor should be given to your children. These vaccines have effectively controlled some of the more known childhood diseases like smallpox, hence vaccination is one of the most effective ways to safeguard your children’s health.

As a parent, you are your baby’s first teacher. There are thousands of toys on the market to help your child learn and grow, but there aren’t many toys that you’ll need for your baby’s first year. You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars to provide your child with a stimulating and nurturing environment. Below are some toys that will help stimulate baby’s brain without breaking the bank.

YOU!
You are the best toy your child will ever have! You can sing, dance, scoop baby up and swing him around, play with him, tickle him, feed him… You alone can engage all of his senses while simultaneously giving him love and affection. What toy can do that?

Rattles and Teething Toys
These bright toys will engage baby’s sight and stimulate his interest. Rattles will also stimulate his sense of sound, while teething toys can provide much-needed relief when those teeth start coming in.

Shape Sorter
Not only will this help your child learn shapes, it will also help him learn about categorization and become a great problem solver.

A Tummy Time Toy
Baby activity centers, mirrors, or other tummy time toys will help keep baby engaged while he is working on some much-needed motor skill development.

Mobiles
A mobile over baby’s head will engage both his sense of sight and sound. While newborns can really only distinguish mostly black and white colors, a bright, soothing mobile will delight baby as he gets older.

Blocks
You probably already knew that blocks are one of the best toys for toddlers; they help build motor, problem-solving, creativity, and even counting skills. But did you know that they make extra soft blocks—both cloth and plastic varieties—for younger babies?

Nesting Cups or Stacking Rings
Teaching baby about size, shape, math, eye-hand coordination, and many other skills can be as simple as using these very basic but effective and engaging toys.

Balls
What baby doesn’t love a ball? Babies love balls that are plush or textured and easy to handle. Balls are great for motor skill development, eye-hand coordination, and even developing social skills in taking turns later on.

Going green seems to be on everyone’s minds these days. What better way to raise an Earth-lover than starting with your baby? There are even cute onesies with phrases like “Treehugger” on them for your future environmentalist. An important reason to keep the environment in mind with your baby, however, is that many things in our environment pose a possible danger to little ones. Below are some very real dangers that you should keep in mind when buying things for baby.

Disposable Diapers
Though very convenient, disposable diapers have been found to contain toxic chemicals, which pollute the air, and polyacrylate crystals for absorption, which can cause vomiting, possible skin reactions, and other possible health problems. There are alternatives, and “eco-friendly” disposable diapers on the market, that can decrease or eliminate these dangers.

Bottle Risks
Choose what kinds of bottles and bottle accessories you use for baby very carefully. Plastic bottles can leech toxic chemicals into baby’s food, and latex nipples may cause allergic reactions. Bottle liners can also pose a toxic chemical risk, and powdered formula is much safer than the liquid version.

Baby Shampoo
Phthalates in baby shampoos (as well as baby lotions and powders) have the potential to cause developmental problems, as well as reproductive issues in males. Though the long-term effects of use are unknown as of yet, experts recommend using mild, natural alternatives if possible. Ask your doctor for recommendations.

Clothing, Electronics, Furniture…and More
Fire retardants (or flame resistant chemicals) are toxic, containing ingredients that could possibly cause cancer, immune system issues, and developmental problems in children. Many of these chemicals are already banned in some places. To be safe, check the manufacturer on the ingredients of the purchases you make.

Disinfectants
Many of the things we use to keep baby’s nursery clean and healthy can actually harm our children. Many air fresheners, disinfectant wipes, and other cleaning supplies can irritate baby’s eyes and nervous systems, and some even contain pesticides that cause even more health concerns. Your best bet is to use safe cleaning agents, such as vinegar and water mixtures, and mild deodorizers, such as baking soda.

Going to a baby store can be very overwhelming, with so many types of everything to choose from. And do you really need all of that stuff? In a word, no. Below are some essential things you need for your nursery. If you still want to get some fancy digs and have the money, feel free; but the items below (plus a good car seat outside the nursery!) are really all the basics you need when baby comes home.

The Bed (and Bed Gear)
Whether you choose a crib, a bassinet, or a co-sleeper, baby needs somewhere to sleep! Depending on which you choose, you may also need a mattress or mattress pad, and you’ll definitely need some receiving blankets and crib sheets.

A Closet, Dresser, or Storage Baskets
If you already have a closet for baby, or even some shelves with some storage baskets, you don’t need a dresser just yet if you don’t want to buy one. If you do have a closet, you will want some hangers. Storage baskets are great for separating sleepers, socks, and all the rest of your baby’s clothes.

Diapers (and Diapering Gear)
If you are using disposable diapers, you’ll need plenty of those; if you are using cloth diapers, be sure to get some safety pins with them (or Velcro covers, if you are choosing those types of diapers). Either way you will also need a pail to store soiled diapers in before cleaning or disposal, plus cloths or wipes to clean baby with and some diaper rash cream to have on hand, just in case.

Clothes
Baby is going to grow very fast, and she won’t have the social calendar of a toddler just yet, so her wardrobe can be pretty limited for now. She’ll need a few sleepers for nighttime, about five soft onesies for comfort and easy changing, enough socks for a different pair each day of the week, and a few hats for sun protection.

Feeding Gear
If you are bottle feeding your baby, you will need formula (the hospital may advise you on what kind your baby may need, especially if she is premature or has any other health conditions), bottles (and liners if you choose to buy that type of bottle), bottle cleaners, and nipples. If you are breast feeding, you don’t really need many supplies, unless you plan on pumping; then you will also need a breast pump and bottles. Either way, you will need a lamp or night light to be able to feed baby at night, some burping clothes for spit-up, and a pillow or boppy could really help with feeding.

Outlet Covers
Before baby comes home, it would be very helpful to go ahead and baby-proof what you can—especially outlets. By the time you get a chance to do it after baby is home, she may already be crawling around!

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Both of these are very important to have in your nursery to ensure baby’s safety.

Optional Extras
Many parents have no problem finding a safe place to change baby, but if you’d like to invest in a changing table it could be helpful. A small shelf or night stand could come in handy for holding a lamp, some books to read to baby, or some of the toys you’re bound to get from relatives! Extra clothes like pants, t-shirts, tiny shoes and nightgowns may not be necessary (especially depending on the weather) but if you’d like to purchase them or think that you will need them, they could possibly come in handy. Organizers, bouncy seats, swings, play yards, mobiles and other items that you may want to purchase are all not necessary for caring for baby, but any of them could be helpful in keeping baby—and her parents!—organized and happy.

Most new moms expect certain things to happen to their bodies when they become pregnant. A growing belly, stretch marks, and swollen ankles are all body changes that we all know about. Vomiting, food cravings, back pain, and frequent urination are symptoms that we’ve seen in the lives of our friends, as well as in movies and television. But there are a few symptoms of pregnancy that you may have never even thought about that some moms experience…

Anger and/or Sadness
If you find yourself being more sad or argumentative during your pregnancy, you’re not alone. Pregnancy hormones can increase both aggressive and sad feelings. If you find yourself feeling these emotions more often than not, be sure to mention it to your doctor.

Bleeding Gums
Hormonal changes can actually make your gums bleed while you are pregnant, especially during flossing or brushing. Though it may be nothing, be sure to mention it to your doctor as well.

The Taste of Pennies
Some women develop a metallic taste in their mouths when they become pregnant. Another symptom of hormonal changes, it’s nothing to worry about, and is usually an early sign of pregnancy.

Bloody Nose
Another body part that may begin to bleed while you are with child is your nose. Using a humidifier will probably clear it right up.

Nightmares and Insomnia
Worrying about your changing body or your new baby can lead to some very sleepless nights. Try to relax and imagine that everything is going to be fine when you begin to worry. If you keep having nightmares or insomnia, tell your doctor.

Extra Spit
If you usually drool in your sleep, you may find yourself drooling even more. Sometimes pregnancy can cause you to produce excess spit, another harmless but still uncomfortable symptom.

Gas and Constipation
Pregnancy hormones can also cause you to belch or pass gas very often. If this is a problem for you, try eliminating carbonated beverages and beans from your diet. These hormones can also cause your intestines to work more slowly, which leads to constipation. Plenty of water and fiber can help ease constipation.

The baby tumbling and kicking in your stomach may make you laugh, cry, or do a little bit of both. You probably run your hands over your tummy countless times a day, sending love and affection to your baby-to-be. But that doesn’t mean that everyone you know—or even complete strangers!—can come up to you and rub your belly like it’s a good luck charm all day long! Here are some tips to help touchy-feely folks, no matter their intentions, steer clear of your baby tummy.

A Polite Approach
You know Auntie Margot and Uncle Lou really do mean well, but do they have to hover over your belly like it’s a crystal ball every time they run into you? Be polite when you ask good friends and relatives to not fondle your tummy every waking moment. Smile, and joke, “Oh, I think baby’s had enough petting today!” Or, before they even touch your belly, mention casually, “Everyone just can’t seem to keep their hands off my stomach! Sometimes it starts to bother me. Did you ever have the same thing happen when you were pregnant?” Give them the chance to empathize with you and understand how you feel.

A Firm No-No
This one’s probably best for those people you don’t know but who seem to think that just because you are pregnant, suddenly your tummy is public property; they want to come pet it like they’re at the zoo! Step back immediately when you see that unwanted hand drop down and say something like, “I don’t like my belly touched, thank you,” or “Please don’t touch me.” Yes, they may get angry or rude, but it is your right to defend your body and to not want to be touched.

Go for the Funny Bone
If you’d like to get your message across and make people (including yourself!) laugh, try designing your own t-shirt that says “No Touchy,” or “Baby on Board: Hands Off!” Get a shirt made with crime scene tape stretched around it, or a printed sign that says “No Trespassers Allowed Beyond This Point.” It will make people both chuckle and realize that you mean business!

When you bring your bundle of joy home from the hospital, your dog or cat may be the last thing on your mind—or one of your worries! Many parents believe that pets can be harmful to their newborns, and it is true that there can be risks, especially if a pet is not used to children or has a history of snapping at unknown people. Try testing your pet out with other children by taking it to the park or visiting a friend with kids; then you may get a gauge on how it might react with your own child. Also, be sure to spay or neuter your pet, which will make him calmer around baby.
If introduced to baby gradually, Fluffy or Fido may just wind up being one of Junior’s best friends. Even better, having a pet around could even benefit your baby.

Kindness and Compassion
Kids raised with pets can develop positive self-esteem, a caring attitude toward all creatures, confidence, and compassion. By seeing Mama or Daddy care for Spot, your child will learn about how important it is to be kind to others and to help both people and animals.

Non-Sneezy Kids
Having more than one pet has been found, in some studies, to reduce the number of allergies children develop. Some experts believe that it’s the bacteria in pets’ saliva that helps promote resistance to allergens. Other studies have also suggested that pets may decrease a child’s risk of asthma.

A Sense of Responsibility
Feeding the kitty or brushing her hair will teach your little one that all creatures need looking after, and that all people have responsibilities to fulfill. This may be a good first chore to give your baby when he becomes a toddler, especially if you use dry pet food and a scoop that makes it easy to use.

Physical Fitness
By horsing around with Spot in the yard, Junior is developing motor skills that are crucial for his development. When he is old enough to take the dog for a walk, that will also serve as a means to physical fitness—along with playing with Spot every day. As you may know already, one can get quite a workout from playing with a pet!

From strangers to germs to weather and more, you are bound to worry about your baby anytime you’re not comfortable at home. But you just can’t keep baby locked up when you have to get groceries, run errands or even take the little one to the doctor. Have no fear; the tips below will help ease your worry about baby being in public.

No Touchy
Ask strangers to refrain from touching your baby. It is your right as your child’s mother to keep other peoples’ germs away from him! They will understand, and if not, who cares? It’s your job to protect your baby. You can also carry some sanitizing hand gel around with you to use when you pick up baby; reports suggest that babies whose parents use sanitizing products before changing them actually get less stomach infections.

Moms Have Eyes Everywhere
Keep baby within your site at all times; you may even wish to install a special mirror in your car to be able to see him if he is in a rear-facing seat. Using one bag for everything instead of lugging a diaper bag, purse, and other items will make it easier to carry; combine everything into a large bag you can carry on your shoulder. Use smaller bags inside it to divide everything (such as makeup bags) if you like. Use a partner when out if possible, so that one of you can keep an eye on the little one while the other can carry shopping bags, pay for items easily, etc.

No Eating Off the Ground
Dropped objects on the ground are obviously no good for baby! If his binky, blankie or favorite toy gets dropped, just tuck it away into your bag and wash it when you get a chance—at a bathroom, restaurant, or at home. Bring a spare binky just in case; keep it in a clean container so you’ve got it easily on hand if binky #1 takes a dive.

Dressing like an Onion
Dressing in layers, that is! The general rule to keeping baby weather-safe is to dress him in an extra layer. So if you are wearing a shirt and jeans on a fall day, give baby an extra set—plus a hat and socks to keep him nice and warm. Sunscreen is also important for kiddos going outside; see what your paediatrician recommends.

All paediatricians agree that tummy time is important for your little one. Since newborns are supposed to be placed on their backs to reduce the risk of SIDS, they haven’t been exposed to lying on their stomachs for a lengthy amount of time as they have in the past; therefore, the crucial development of fine and gross motor skills, neck muscles, and many other vital areas get neglected. Plus, some babies even develop misshapen heads if left on their backs constantly! Tummy time is very important to help your child’s development.

But some kiddos just hate tummy time! It is uncomfortable to them since they are not used to it, and because of that, they may resist. They may fuss the entire time, and when they are able, even roll back over onto their backs. Here are some quick tips on how to make tummy time work for you and baby.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race
Give your baby some time to adjust to being on his tummy gradually. Try propping him up first—a boppy works well for this, or even a very firm pillow. Just make sure that it supports his torso well and does not touch his face. This will get him used to being closer to his tummy, and you can give him time like this for a week; then try the supported tummy time for half the time, substituting regular tummy time for the other half. Eventually it will be easier on baby.

Hold His Interest
By using toys, books, or other objects that make your little one squeal with joy, you may just distract him from the fact that he’s on his stomach! Try something bright or a noise-making toy, such as a rattle. Mirrors are great for this too; many babies love to sit and stare at themselves for a very long time. Laying a soft or board book in front of him and soothingly reading it could also do the trick.

Seeing Eye-to-Eye
Your baby could be scared because of the new perspective; after all, he can’t see his loving mommy or daddy’s face like he normally can! Try getting on your own tummy and smiling at him face-to-face. Talk to him in a gentle voice, sing to him, or do any other activity you normally do when you cuddle him. This can help him relax and realize that Mommy or Daddy is still around, and that being on your tummy is for everyone!

From diapers to feeding, colic to spit-up to well baby visits and scares with sickness, there is a lot that new moms have to take in when baby comes home. In addition to caring for a new child, some mothers even have additional responsibilities like caring for a parent or other relative, going to school, or even another job. That’s enough to make Mama dizzy! No matter what your responsibilities are as a mother, wife, daughter, worker, whatever, you have to make sure to get some rest and take care of yourself—or you won’t be good at anything but being tired!

Resting is important for keeping your mind alert and clear, and your body healthy and functioning. Lack of sleep can lead to a number of problems, including fatigue, loss of memory, disorientation, irritability, and poor decision-making. None of these will help you or baby! Try out using some of the tips below in getting the rest you need.

Take a Break
If you can’t get in enough sleep tonight, try squeezing in a nap whenever you can. Sometimes a quick, twenty-minute nap can rejuvenate you to take on the tasks you need to do today—but it’s not going to fix your sluggishness forever, so be sure to get real sleep when you can. If you simply cannot sleep but have ten minutes to spare, try taking a shower. That may wake you up enough until you can sleep again and equip you to take care of what you need to do between now and then—and it will make you feel like a clean, sane person again!

Sleep When Baby Sleeps
If you can, try sleeping when your baby is sleeping for the first few weeks. It will be a weird schedule—almost like a schedule of frequent napping!—but at least you will be able to really get some shuteye in. This will also allow you some peace of mind, knowing that baby is resting and while you are. Then when you both wake, you will feel a bit more energized and ready to take care of your little one.

Ask for Help
See if your parent, sibling or friend can spare a few hours to care for baby while you rest. Chances are they will be happy to help and spend some time with your bundle of joy. If your husband or partner is available, try taking shifts with one another to sleep. You don’t have to do this alone! Raising a baby is a difficult job, and there is never any shame in asking for a hand from someone you love and trust.

There is a lot of pressure on new mothers these days to breast feed. There are great reasons to breast feed your baby, of course—studies say that benefits range from increased immunity to better nutrition, to even preventing ailments such as ear infections and allergies. But what if you just can’t breast feed?

Low Milk Production
Due to various reasons, some mothers simply cannot make enough milk to feed their babies. There are many mothers who had planned on breast feeding, but were dismayed to discover that they were unable to make enough milk. Some may have had cysts in their breasts; others, despite working with lactation consultants, doctors and pediatricians, could never find out just why their bodies would not make milk. This can be very distressing to a mother who had her heart set on breastfeeding.

Hectic Work Schedule
If Mom works a busy schedule, she may not be able to feed baby her breast milk. Some moms are able to pump at work during breaks throughout the day, but others, who have meetings all day long, who run their own businesses, or simply do not have enough breaks to pump, cannot keep up with the amount of milk needed to feed their babies. Some of these mothers may choose to breastfeed while at home when they can, and supplement with formula when they are working.

Mom’s Meds
Though most medications are safe to take while nursing your little one, there are some that you definitely don’t want to pass on to baby through your milk. Many of these medications contain warning labels about taking the drugs while pregnant or nursing, but the best action is to check with your doctor first before taking a medication that could possibly harm baby.

The bottom line is that breast or bottle feeding is your decision as a parent. Healthy, happy babies can be raised on both mother’s milk and formula. The right choice is to do whatever will work for you and your baby; you are not a bad mother if you choose to not (or cannot) breastfeed!

“Counting 6 and 7 to 8 months? Oh no! My baby is premature, what happens now!?”

Premature birth is a problem that most parents face today. Some say that it is caused by unhealthy lifestyle, parent’s genetic make up, and so on and so forth.

Premature babies are unable to eat through their mouths, breath with ease, or even stay warm on their own. Their small bodies are simply not fully developed and grown to function right. However, some babies who are placed in an incubator may have a greater chance of a normal life – some.

When babies are born too much early this can cause premature baby health problems, which can range from mild to life-threatening medical conditions. It is a sad fact, but sometimes it does happen.

What is Premature Birth?

Medically speaking, preterm birth means that a baby is born less than 37 weeks (less than 8 months) gestational age. Premature birth is a term used which pertains to the physiological state of a newborn baby, and that it indicates that the baby still needs certain medical support that will aid in the further development of their organs.

In general, “preterm babies” are referred to as “premature” and “term babies” are referred to as “mature”. Normal pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks. Those born 3 weeks earlier or more are considered premature. A lot of premature babies who were born closer to 37 weeks are less problematic.

Premature babies born at about 32 weeks are unable to eat, breathe, and stay warm without external help. Once they get all the medical support they need within a period of time most of them can leave the hospital and live a normal life.

Premature babies born at about 26 weeks are more likely to have critical health problems. If a baby is born small or sickly, parents may be face with a very hard life and death decisions about their treatments.

Medical practitioners oftentimes refer to premature babies as “preemies”

What are the Signs & Symptoms of Premature Births?

The signs and symptoms of an impending premature birth are:

1.More than four uterine contractions every hour, before the 37 weeks gestation.
2.Vaginal water discharge, which might suggest that the membranes around the baby had prematurely ruptured.
3.A feeling that the baby “dropped”, or pressures around the area of the pelvis.
4.Abdominal pains or menstrual like cramps.
5.Rhythmic tightening or pain at the lower back or abdomen.
6.Vaginal bleeding or spotting.

What are the Causes of Premature Births?

There are many causes of premature births. Some are due the mother’s condition, or due to the fetus’ condition.

Mother’s Health Condition:

1.Chronic illness
2.Trauma
3.Substance abuse
4.Infections
5.Hypertension

Complications of the Placenta or the Uterus:

1.Detachment or malformation of the placenta.
2.Malformation of the uterus.
3.Pressures in the uterus due to excessive amniotic fluid production, which causes early contractions.
4.Early opening of the cervix.

Fetal Causes:

1.Abnormalities in the chromosomal make-up.
2.Fetal malformation
3.Infections

What are the Treatments for Premature Babies?

Caring for premature babies varies depending on the baby’s age, weight, and maturity. For extremely premature babies medical support should include:

1.Placing the baby in an incubator.
2.Surfactant administration to aid their lungs to breathe on their own volition.
3.Insertion of a breathing tube in the baby’s trachea. Ventilator and supplemental oxygen might also be used.
4.Sufficient nutrition should be given through a feeding tube or intravenously. For feeding tube, the mother’s breast milk should be used to avoid infections.

What are the Preventions for Premature Births?

A healthy lifestyle is an important factor in preventing premature birth. Here are some preventive measures that a mother can do on their own or with help:

1.Regular prenatal check-up.
2.Eating healthy foods.
3.Monitor chronic medical conditions.
4.Diligently follow the doctor’s advice with regards to physical activities.
5.Avoid certain substances.
6.Consult a doctor about sex activities.
7.Have a stress free routine.

Premature birth is very scary and stressful for parents. But don’t scream “My Baby is Premature!” at the top of your lungs – it would not help. What would help is for parents to take good care of each other in this time of crisis. Talk to your families, friends, counselors, and doctors for help and advice. You do not have to face this alone.

Babies are cute, but they are also prone to baby disorders that may affect their health in the long run. It is not enough that parents feed them right, clean them well, or provide them with adequate care that is due them. Parents should also take note of their bodily wastes particularly their poops or more commonly known as stools.

Babies, no matter how cuddly they look (which they really are) can be stricken with baby disorders such as the Newborn Constipation. Babies cannot talk and they sure can’t communicate well what they feel, especially if there is something wrong. That is why parents should be knowledgeable enough to see any signs of discomforts that may befall them.

What is Newborn Constipation?

Constipation in general is a severe or persistent condition wherein bowel movements happen less frequent than what is normal. It consists of dry and hard stools, which are difficult or painful to pass. Even though constipation is a common term, with typical patterns of bowel movements, they do vary widely from a person to another person. In general, adults who hasn’t defecated in 3 days or children who hasn’t pooped in 4 days are considered constipated. Babies, on the other hand, who are exclusively on a breast milk diet, can go 7 days without having the need to poop.

What are the Signs & Symptoms of Newborn Constipation?

1.Children who are constipated might feel a little bloated, have a swollen abdomen, suffer from a headache, or poop hard feces; or bleed, strain, or even feel pain during a bowel movement.
2.Months old babies who are constipated might cry, strain, arch their back, or draw their legs toward their abdomen during a bowel movement.
3.Newborns, on the other hand, might also strain, grunt, turn red face, and draw their legs toward their abdomen when their pooping a soft and normal stool. If a newborn baby’s stool in not hard, then the baby is not constipated.

Additionally, a doctor should be consulted if a 2 months old baby is constipated, or hasn’t had a bowel movement in 3 days or more, except for those babies who are breastfed exclusively. Also, if irritability or vomiting is present, a doctor should also be consulted without delay.

What are the Treatments for Constipation?

It is not surprising that sometimes the remedy for newborn constipation is just at home. But before you do any of these home remedies it is imperative that you still consult with your doctor for the best possible treatment. Here are some home treatments for constipation (except for breastfed babies):

To be taken orally:

•A daily dose of 1 ounce watered down prune juice.
•Give them rich in fiber foods like plums, prunes, peas, apricots, peaches, or pears.
•An oatmeal cereal mixed with mashed prunes.
•Prune or apple juice.
•A couple ounces of warm water.

To be administered:

•Baby Tummy Massage: Circular motion on the baby’s stomach.
•Warm Bath: To help the baby relax.
•Bicycle Exercise: Baby on its back then mimic a bicycle motion with their legs.

On extreme constipation, doctors might recommend the use of lactulose, maltsupex, colace, and glycerin suppository.

Constipation can really be a problem for both the baby and the parents. What parents should know about “Baby Poop” is that early on they should do some research about it. They should also talk to their pediatrician so that they can develop a strategic treatment when the time comes.

A lot of beauty companies today use the image of a baby who has a perfectly smooth skin to entice consumers to use their product to get the same effect. Women, and also men, are vying to achieve baby-like skin for obvious reasons - Vanity. It is true that babies are born with beautiful skin, which is why parents cuddle them so much!

For years people believe that babies are born with flawless skin – or so they thought. You’d be surprise that certain baby disorders cause a not so perfect skin for babies. Such baby disorder is the Newborn Acne.

What is Newborn Acne and What Causes It?

Newborn acne, also referred to as acne neonatorum, it is an illness which affects about twenty percent of newborn babies. Wounds show at about two weeks postpartum, but usually fade away after three months. These wounds contain tiny, red, papules that primarily affect the nose and cheeks of babies.

Babies normally get neonatal acne due to the stimulation of the babies’ sebaceous glands by remaining maternal hormones after birth. This hormone crosses the placenta and enters the baby’s system, which after birth causes the oil glands of the skin to produce pimple like bumps. Newborn acne normally diminishes within weeks, but sometimes they can pester babies for months.

Recent study shows that newborn acne is caused by yeast called saprotrophic (Malassezia Species). These yeast causes skin infection that leads to the manifestation of acne-like pustules, as well as baby “cradle cap”.

Typical Newborn Acne Patterns in Babies:

1. Usually it sets in at about three weeks old. However, in some cases it may manifest right after birth.
2. Baby boys are more prone to newborn acne than baby girls.
3. The most common types of newborn acne in babies are the pustules and papules. Pustules (whiteheads) are tiny bumps on the skin with pus collection inside. Papules are tiny solid red rounded bumps rising on the skin, which is very similar to that of a red pimple.

What are the Treatments for Newborn Acne?

Almost all babies get newborn acne around their faces, including their cheeks, and oftentimes on their scalps. Most newborn acnes will disappear spontaneously by itself in about a month or so, therefore most babies will not require treatment to cure their newborn acne at all.

It will greatly help if mothers can gently clean their baby’s face once every day with a mild baby soap and lukewarm water. It is also important to know that using lotions or oils on a baby’s skin will not help, and will just further irritate the skin. Remember, newborn acne naturally disappears through time without any help, just a normal cleansing regimen will do.

Sometimes if babies get severe newborn acne, a doctor may prescribe a treatment with topical antifungals or creams such as retinoids, or, benzoyl peroxide. Do not under any circumstances apply any creams without a doctor’s recommendation, because sometimes the best intentions are not met with the best results.

What are the Preventions for Newborn Acne?

A lot of first time moms and dads worry to much that they would not be able to take photographs of their babies until their acnes disappears. So what they do is try to prevent it with all sorts of medications, little do they know that some babies are just born with it, meaning they will really go through that “natural” process no matter what. They just have to remember that “Babies With Pimples” is just a temporary thing, and much sooner than expected their babies will outgrow it!

What a joy they bring to moms and dads; grandmas and grandpas; and brothers and sisters. They are carried in their mother’s womb for nine months, and the happy couple happily prepares for them to finally come out.

But are they really prepared? Yes, they may prepare for the baby clothes, toys, feeding bottles, nursery rooms, and even college plans. But are they prepared for baby disorders, particularly Baby Sleep Disorders?

What is Baby Sleep Disorders?

By medical definition, sleep disorders in general is a group of symptoms defined by disruption in a patient’s amount, timing or quality of sleep, as well as in the physiological or behavioral conditions related with sleeping. There are more or less 70 different types of sleeping disorders. To meet the criteria for a sleep disorder diagnosis, the condition should be continual, causing a patient an evidential emotional suffering, and interference with basic functions. In some cases doctors might recommend a patient to undergo Polysomnography (a test that evaluate sleep disorders) which produces clinical based results.

Baby Sleep Disorders is a common problem throughout a baby’s early months and years. Parents are most troubled about baby sleep disorders, because babies who frequently wake up in the middle of the night can cause disturbance in a family’s routine. However, they fail to realize that these disorders are no different from what adults suffer in the same situation. One difference is that adults can control their actions (somewhat) but babies cannot.

This has caused a continuing debate in the medical field, as they try to differentiate sleep disorders in babies and adults, because babies (2-3 months old) who frequently wake up is normal, but toddlers (2-3 years old) who shows sign of waking up frequently is not.

What are the Types of Baby Sleep Disorders?

When evaluating a suspected sleeping disorder in babies, it is imperative to recognize a baby’s sleeping pattern. Babies do not sleep like an adult, toddler or even children. Usually, babies sleep for more than 15 to 16 hours per day, which can be 30 minutes to more than 3 hours at a given time. The duration of sleep can be equally divided between night and day. When a baby reaches one year old, it will sleep at around 14 hours a day, which will be longer at night, but might still wake a few more times. It is regarded as normal and not a sleeping disorder, but it is surely very tiring for parents.

There are two common classes of baby sleep disorders, they are the:

However, once a baby grows older, they will also outgrow these sleeping disorders.

Dyssomnias: Is defined as having difficulty sleeping, or sleeping for longer hours than normal, or having a “too” restful sleep. The obstructive sleep apnea (blockage of airway during sleep) is a common type of dyssomnia in babies. Although similar to adult sleep apnea, symptoms differ from that of the pediatric apnea. Symptoms in babies show non-stop snoring, breathing in the mouth, and failure to keep-up.

Baby sleep disorders can range from mild to critical conditions. The best possible way to avoid probable problems is to take note of any differences in a baby’s sleeping pattern. Consult and discuss with a doctor if any noticeable changes occurs. Baby sleep disorders can be fatal if left untreated. Would it not be nice to finally say “Goodnight Baby” with no worries at all?

Moms and Dads all over the world find joy in knowing that they are expecting one. So it is sad to say that “some” parents are not fully prepared mentally, spiritually, and financially to care for a baby, which brings to mind some baby disorders that might pose a problem to some parents. Such baby disorder is the Shaken Baby Syndrome. Unfortunately some baby disorders are not limited to natural causes, because sometimes it is inflicted “intentionally” or “unintentionally” – either way it is a problem and babies are the victims.

This creates a whiplash kind of motion which causes acceleration and/or deceleration injuries. It is somewhat expected not see any visible signs of external trauma. Injuries caused by blows from hardened objects may more likely to result in SBS. The combination of striking with a hardened object and shaking is sometimes referred to as shaken/slam syndrome or shaken impact syndrome.

In some cases, first signs of any problems related to SBS may not be noticeable until the child is entered in the school system, and there they show learning and behavioral difficulties. By that time, it is very hard to associate these difficulties with a shaking incident that happened a few years back.

Shaken baby syndrome can be prevented, it is just a matter of having the right know how in caring for a baby. More often than not, shaking happens when one is frustrated with a baby’s crying. What people should know is that crying is very normal (in most cases) for babies. In some countries, they even allow their babies to cry for a period of time especially in the morning, because they believe that it makes them stronger.

Parents and all those people involve in the caring for a baby should realize that babies are small and helpless, and in constant need of attention. If parents cannot take that kind of responsibility they might as well stay away from infants. In the end it is simply not enough to say “don’t shake that baby” – you have to live by that rule.

A number of later-in-life dads mentioned to me that their biggest concern was not being able to keep up with a toddler at forty-two, or a teenager at fifty-five.

If you’re a dad over forty, get to the gym several times a week, take a hard look at your diet and make improvements, start walking more and sitting less. Not only will you have the energy for your kids, but you’ll look better, feel better, and stick around longer as well!

Seriously, many people in their 40’s are in their peak earning years, having achieved a certain level of success in their career. It may be even more difficult at that point to start taking time off for children than it would have been in twenties and thirties.

Most stay-at-home dads that I know are also (like me) work-at-home dads.
